What’s up, folks? So check this out, the parent company of ChatGPT, OpenAI, is considering developing their own AI chip, man. According to the reports from Reuters, OpenAI hasn’t made any final decisions on it yet. But experts in the AI field say they’ve been exploring various options for AI chips in the past year, bro. They’ve been thinking about building their own AI chip, teaming up with the biggest chip manufacturer in America, Nvidia, and other chip makers to develop this AI chip, man.
Why does OpenAI want to make its own chip?
Listen up, the CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, has made it his priority to get as many AI chips as possible, dude. He recently complained about the lack of Graphics Processing Units (GPUs), man. I gotta tell you, Nvidia dominates the AI chip market, supplying 80% of the world market with their fancy chips. So, OpenAI wants to get their hands on more AI chips, for two reasons, man. First, they need advanced processors to power their software, and second, it’s gonna cost them a pretty penny to run the necessary hardware to fuel their efforts and products, man.
Running ChatGPT ain’t cheap, bro
Since 2020, OpenAI has been developing its generative AI technology on a massive supercomputer created by Microsoft. This supercomputer uses a whopping 10,000 GPUs from Nvidia, man. So, running ChatGPT is quite a costly endeavor for the company, dude. By developing their own AI chips, OpenAI will be joining the ranks of a small group within big tech companies like Google and Amazon.com, who demanded control over those chips they designed because it’s fundamental to their businesses, dude.
Creating custom chips means heavy investment, man
Now, it’s not certain whether OpenAI will move forward with the plan of building custom chips or not, man. Industry experts say that doing so would be a major strategic move, but it’s gonna require heavy investment, possibly costing millions of dollars annually, bro. However, acquiring a chip company could accelerate OpenAI’s process of creating their own chip, man. But hey, it could still take many years for OpenAI’s plan of developing their own chip to fully come to fruition, bro.
