So recently, OpenAI went through some serious drama when they fired their CEO Sam Altman. It was a wild five days with the whole artificial intelligence community in turmoil until they finally agreed to bring Altman back as CEO and add new board members after almost all employees threatened to quit. And even the President and co-founder came back after all that chaos, showing some deep tensions in the AI world. But now, the Chief Scientist and co-founder Ilya Sutskever is in a weird spot because he was part of the board that fired Altman.
Altman said he holds no grudges and wants to keep working with Sutskever, but apparently, the Chief Scientist has kind of disappeared from OpenAI. Someone on X, which used to be Twitter, suggested that Sutskever should come work at Tesla, and guess who responded? Elon Musk. He said, “or xAI.”
According to scholar Helen Toner, who used to be on the board, the firing wasn’t about AI safety, it was about a lack of trust. And it seems like Sutskever regrets being part of that decision. But Musk has been calling out Sutskever’s role in Altman’s firing, saying he has a strong moral compass and that he thinks the world should know why Sutskever was so against Altman. That’s some intense stuff, man.
