Analytics firm Similarweb reported that for the past three months, ChatGPT has been experiencing a decline in its monthly website traffic. And that’s no bueno, my friends.
In August alone, the worldwide desktop and mobile website visits to ChatGPT took a nosedive by a whopping 3.2%, hitting the 1.43 billion mark. Ouch! And get this, it’s not just a one-time thing. This decline follows two consecutive months of around 10% drops in website traffic. So, things are looking pretty grim for ol’ ChatGPT.
But hey, it’s not all doom and gloom. There’s a tiny glimmer of hope shining through. In August, there was a slight uptick in worldwide unique visitors to ChatGPT. The numbers went from 180 million to 180.5 million users. Hey, every little bit counts, right?

Some smarty-pants educational institutions have started embracing this AI chatbot, leading to a rise in traffic and usage, especially in the good ol’ United States of America. As American schools kickstarted their sessions, ChatGPT traffic from the US showed a modest increase. Looks like the kids want some AI help with their homework after all!
According to Mr. David F. Carr, an analyst at Similarweb who happens to keep a close eye on ChatGPT and its competitors, he had a few things to say about the situation. He noticed that the percentage of younger users on the website dropped over the summer but is now starting to bounce back. Looks like the students are making a comeback, my friends!

You can use this baby without spending a dime. Of course, there’s a premium subscription option that sets you back around 20 bucks a month, but hey, freedom ain’t free, right?
But here’s the thing, ChatGPT’s revenue streams go way beyond just website traffic. OpenAI is raking in the dough by selling access to its AI models directly to developers and big corporations.
