Alright, check this out, we got this image from the Cardiff West Socialist Party. It’s a photo of Open AI. It’s this company that owns these super advanced AI tools, ChatGPT and Dall-E, which can generate text and images. You know what I’m saying? It’s next-level stuff.
So get this, the CEO and co-founder, Sam Altman, got the boot on November 17th. But then, just two days later, he got rehired. Apparently, the majority of the company’s engineers threatened to quit if he didn’t come back. That’s wild, man.
But here’s the thing, the internal culture of the organization doesn’t really match up with what’s written on paper. In 2019, they changed their subsidiary from non-profit to “capped” profit – 100 times initial capital investment. And since then, Microsoft has invested over $13 billion into OpenAI.
Under capitalism, research is driven by profit and monopolization. No amount of well-meaning words in a company’s mission statement can change that reality. You feel me?
And there’s a lot of hype around generative algorithms, but under capitalism, self-regulation won’t ever prioritize safety and socially useful applications over profit.
So here’s the thing, socialists are calling for public ownership under democratic workers’ control of AI research and development. That way we can prioritize useful applications like medicine, education, and transportation, instead of just chasing profits.
Imagine if AI was developed and trained in a socialist society, where the economy is collectively owned and democratically planned. We could see a huge reduction in the work week, without a loss of pay. That means more time and energy for everyone to explore and achieve their potential. It’s crazy to think about.
