Man, OpenAI just flip-flopped on the situation with their CEO. They just canned the co-founder Sam Altman and appointed their CTO Mira Murati as the in-charge on an interim basis. This handover came as a bombshell; Altman had been yapping about AI’s potential to wreck society plus he commercialized the tech. A few of its employees bailed and set up Anthropic, a rival AI lab. Their biggest backer, Microsoft, chipped in with $10 billion and had a 49 percent stake in the company, and just couple of weeks ago, OpenAI had a developer conference where they hyped its ChatGPT app-store-like marketplace.
Sam Altman himself was flyin’ around the world talkin’ to world leaders, and even spoke at a high-profile conference attended by US President Joe Biden and China’s President Xi Jinping. But it looks like OpenAI’s board wasn’t buying in – they suspected that Altman wasn’t always bein’ honest with them. Plus, it seems like the board was gettin’ uneasy with the direction OpenAI was headed, loaded up with factory-farmed language models churned out from the internet and passing them off as futuristic. And not only that, one of OpenAI’s big brains, Greg Brockman, is out too. He was president and chairman of the board, yet mossy bailed too.
It’s going to be interesting to see where OpenAI goes from here – they may have to adjust to their new leadership and also those took off!
