Artificial Intelligence, man, it’s everywhere these days. You can’t escape the stories and opinions about this crazy, relevant topic. Some of the stuff you’ve read talks about the cool things AI can do, like making businesses more efficient and predicting the future, ya know? But there’s also a dark side to AI, my friends. You’ve got things like large language model “hallucinations,” plagiarism concerns, misinformation, and bias. It’s a mixed bag, for sure.
With all this talk about the future of AI and how it can improve businesses, it’s important for compliance professionals to be at the center of the conversation. They’re the ones who can navigate the regulatory landscape and make sure AI is being used responsibly.
I had a chat with NAVEX recently to get the lowdown on how to deal with AI in business, man. They had some burning questions, and I was happy to provide some insights.
Now, here’s the thing, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach for AI. It’s like, every organization has its own unique needs and use cases, right? So how should businesses approach the whole ethical AI journey?
Well, first things first, you gotta do a risk assessment, from a compliance standpoint, my friend. Find out if AI is already being used in the business. If it is, how is it being used? Is there documentation? Are there any rules about its use? Get all the details, man.
Then, you gotta find out if there are any planned AI projects. And if there are, are there any rules or policies in place? Dig deep and find out all the deets.
Finally, you gotta evaluate if the use of AI aligns with the law, the company’s values, and ethical business practices. ‘Cause, let me tell ya, the law is always changing when it comes to AI, man. Europe’s got this proposed AI Act, and the U.S. is figuring out regulations too. Compliance needs to stay on top of these laws and make sure the planned activities are in line with ’em. And don’t forget about GDPR, it already covers some AI-related stuff.
In the end, compliance needs to be on the ball, my friends. Just because something is legal doesn’t mean it’s right, ya know? Gotta consider the values and ethics of the company too.
Now, here’s the million-dollar question: how can businesses establish guardrails for their AI program without stifling the excitement and potential of the technology?
Man, you can’t be too rigid with these guardrails, ya feel me? ‘Cause things change all the time in the world of AI. You gotta be flexible. Train the people who are working with AI to consider the law, the company’s values, and ethical practices. Make sure they’re aware of the important stuff, man.
And write all that important info down in a policy document or advisory note. It’s gotta be accessible to everyone, maybe on an intranet or something. That way, when things change, people can always refer back to it.
Now, here’s a doozy for ya: do organizations have an ethical obligation to help their employees understand the impacts of AI? And if so, how should they approach the whole communication thing?
Absolutely, man! Any organization that’s using AI or thinking about using it has a moral responsibility to educate their employees about the impacts, my friend. They gotta train ’em on the potential pitfalls and red flags, based on what the company is doing or planning to do. And there are so many ways to do it, too. You can do in-person training, eLearning, webinars, you name it. The key is reinforcement, man. Keep hammering those ideas into everyone’s heads so they understand the ethical side of AI usage.
